I haven’t mastered the art of packing light yet. But I’m working on it. I take it as a challenge every time I travel. But I’m happy to say that I’ve gotten better at it over time. I’ve learned to trim down the things I put in my check-in luggage. As for my carry on, I make sure that the essentials come first and the rest just take up whatever space is left.

1. Travel documents

Apart from my passport and flight tickets, I made it a habit to bring copies of important documents in my carry-on. I also keep digital copies in my mobile devices. I make sure that I keep printed copies of my itineraries, train tickets, and specific information about how to get to my destination if applicable.

2. Valuables

I try to avoid bringing valuables when traveling. And I put what few things of value I might have with me in my carry on. These items usually include my wallet, camera or mobile devices, and anything I consider too pricey to leave in my luggage.

3. Medications

I have a small pill box where I put whatever medication I need while on the road. These are usually prescription medicines or vitamins that I need to take at certain times of the day.

4. Collapsible water bottle

I prefer to drink water than sodas or other beverages. One of my must-have travel items is a collapsible water bottle that I can easily stash in my carry on. The first thing I do after clearing security check is to head somewhere I can fill it with water.

5. Portable charger

My phone charger’s always on my carry on essentials checklist. But I’ve also invested on a lightweight and small portable mobile device charger to make sure I can juice up my phone anywhere.

6. Change of clothes

I’m used to flight delays. But I’ve experienced one in the past that left me stuck at the airport during layover far longer than I imagined. And I had no change of clothes. It was one of the worst experiences I’ve had. I learned to carry at least one spare shirt and underwear in my carry on. I also make sure that I have suitable clothes for whatever weather they have in the place I’m headed to.

7. Travel hygiene kit
I have a miniature travel kit that contains a small toothpaste, foldable toothbrush, hand sanitizer, facial wipes, deodorant, and lip balm. I also have a travel sewing kit with in case I need to fix a loose button on my clothes.

8. Reading materials and other entertainment

I like reading so I make sure that I have plenty of materials on my phone. I tend to avoid traveling with so many gadgets so most forms of entertainment are usually stocked in whatever gadget I have with me.

9. Sleeping kit

I’m a light sleeper. I can’t sleep with the lights on and I’m sensitive to noise. This is why I always have an eye mask and ear plug with me. I want to get as much sleep as I can while traveling and those two things have been helpful in ensuring that I get enough snooze.
